Each student is required to complete a research project on the theme of “Colonialism: Successes, Failures and Consequences” The project consists of 20-30 minute oral report.

The following requirements must be met on the final draft of the research paper:

      1. The oral report must be written in formal outline format. (Including a title page and works cited page.)

      2. Parenthetical documentation according to MLA style must be used. Consult citation engines such as MLA.com or a MLA Handbook.

         3. You must have 10 sources for your annotated bibliography. At least seven sources must be cited in the outline. Of these, at least two must be primary sources (letters, maps, news articles, journals etc.), and you cannot use any more than two internet sources.

      4. No report will be accepted until all preliminary components have been presented-topic sheet, note cards (must be at least 10 cards per source), first draft of outline, thesis statement, and annotated bibliography.

      6. The final outline is due before 8:15 a.m. on May 11, 2012. Any paper received after that time will be considered late. The penalty for late papers will be 10 points. Any student who is unable to attend school on May 11 is responsible for seeing that I receive his/her outline before 8:15 a.m.

      7. Final draft components are as follows: title page, outline, and work cited.

      8. In addition to the paper, each student is expected to present the following items: 1) All note cards used in the report, placed in the order in which they appear. 2) Annotated Bibliography 3) First outline draft 4.) Completed research calendar. All materials should be placed inside a large envelope with the name of the student printed in the upper right corner.

      9. Please do not staple or bind the outline paper; instead, please fasten the final draft components with a large paper clip.

      10. Remember your report must discuss:

            a. Before the colonization: Causes, origin, background information

            b. During colonization: advancements, contributions and  consequences

            c. After colonization: cultural, political, ethnic, and environmental effects

      11. Your topic cannot be on the British colonization of America. 

 

Requirements for documentary or power point presentation

      1. Story board (Documentary) or print out (Power Point or Prezi)

      2. Contains 2 of 4: interview with a primary source or authority on the subject, still pictures, film clips, and student presentation.

      3. Uses sound clips and/or music

      4. 20-30 minutes in length

 

 

 

 

Requirements for display

      1. Uses any material to build display, but it cannot violate school code. (Limit two trifold boards.)

      2. Uses cut out letters. No written or drawn letters.

      3. Photographs or photocopied pictures with documentation. Drawn pictures will be left to the discretion of the teacher.

      4. Typed captions for pictures or graphs with documentation.

      5. 20-30 minute oral presentation

      6. May use quotes from the oral report on the board.
