PARTS OF A BOOK

 

APPENDIX:  Sometimes a book will have a supplementary section which contains materials such as charts, maps, graphs, etc.; extra information in the back of a book.

 

AUTHOR:  Writer of the book.

 

BIBLIOGRAPHY:  This can be (1) a list of books the author used in preparing the book or (2) a list of materials for further reading on the subject.

 

BODY or TEXT:  This is the main part of the book; story part of the book.

 

CONTENTS or TABLE OF CONTENTS:  This gives the names of the chapters of the book and the pages on which they are located.

 

COPYRIGHT DATE:  The year the book was copyrighted or published.

 

COPYRIGHT PAGE:   Also called the VERSO PAGE; this is the page on the reverse side of the title page.  It contains the year the book was copyrighted or published.

 

COVER:  Outer boards of the book.

 

DEDICATION PAGE or DEDICATION:   This is a short statement expressing appreciation to someone who has been influential in the author's life.

 

DUST JACKET or BOOK JACKET:  A protective cover for the book.

 

FOOTNOTES:   May be placed at the bottom of each page where required or in a special section for notes.

 

FRONTISPIECE:   Located opposite the regular title page.  It frequently contains an illustration related to the topic of the book.

 

GLOSSARY:  A list of definitions of special terms in a book.

 

HALF-TITLE PAGE:  Located just before the regular title page containing the title of the book only.

 

ILLUSTRATOR:  The artist who creates the paintings or drawings inn a book.

 

ILLUSTRATIONS:  This is a list of illustrations (pictures, maps, graphs, etc.) with their page numbers.

 

INDEX:  This is an alphabetical listing of the information found in the book.

 

PAGES:  Leaves of the book.

 

PREFACE, FORWARD, or INTRODUCTION:  This is a brief explanation of the author's purpose in writing the book.  It also includes information about the scope and importance of the book.

 

PUBLISHER:  A person or company responsible for producing printed materials (books).

 

SPINE:  The backbone of the book.

 

TITLE:  The name of the book.

 

TITLE PAGE:  It is usually the first printed page in a book.  It contains the title, author, illustrator, publisher, and place of publication.
